The Jure Stanić Darak Collection
Jure Stanić Darak was born in Lokva Rogoznica in 1928. He began making reliefs and wooden statues later in life, after retiring. His collection at the Omiš City Museum consists of 170 original reliefs, statues and portraits. The most impressive are the statues, showing the life of a Dalmatian farmer clearing his land, cultivating his vines and olive trees, as hunter, shepherd, beekeeper, cooper, shoemaker, player of the Morra finger guessing game (šijavica), a woman making wool, washing the laundry, scrubbing the floor, shelling fava beans,.. Apart from an intrinsic artistic merit, his work can boast an added documentary and ethnographic value, since the characters are depicted in traditional attire, and their common feature is a realistic portrayal of rural life in the first half of the 20th century, in the area of the author’s birth place.
